TODAY’S BEST DISCOVERY is the fruit of the sugar palm tree or KAONG. We found them Brgy. San Miguel, Sto. Tomas, Batangas. The Kaong we are familiar with is from bottles, artificially colored green or red sometimes and full of preservatives. This is the real thing—giant jelly beans, translucent white and deliciously chewy. Chop them open with a heavy knife and eat them straight from the shell. Or make into a simple sweet by boiling in white sugar. The sugar palm trees grow very, very high so it would take a brave hearted man to climb these trees for us. So high that when we were kids, the only way we could feast on Kaong was to shoot the fruits down with a slingshot (Paltik). For every 10 stones we sent up, we successfully bring one Kaong fruit down. A very poor shooting average and a true test of persistence. The sight of these Kaongs on the ground brings back very good memories, we can’t wait to eat these! Happy to share with you. Just 50 kilos available.
