CRY FOR OKRA. Every other day, this farmer from Arayat, Pampanga bravely fords a river at dawn to harvest 50,000 pieces of Okra by the time it’s late afternoon. The middlemen have offered a price so low, so oppressive that he is almost at the point of no longer bothering. How low? You will not believe it—10 cents per piece. Sampung sentimo, ay Apo Diyos! Some lucky days he gets 15 cents but most days he is out of pocket for the pickers he hires to help him. This poor farmer is days away from giving up, leaving his plants where they stand so they will just wither away and die. It used to be he was able to make a simple living out of Okra but when farmers in nearby Cabiao town shifted to Okra production, the price of Okra has plummeted. Poor farmer has had to compete, he has had to struggle. Ten cents per capsule! Why we recently had ebi tempura at a pricey Japanese restaurant and the one piece of fried okra on that plate versus the price of the whole thing, it must have been 200 pesos. What can we do to help this farmer? What can you do with TWO HUNDRED PIECES OF OKRA—that’s right, 200 —if we gave it to you at P200 din? Pwedeng more if you’d like, just ask us.

Tempura’d? Grilled or roasted? Steamed? Pickled? Curried? Crisped? Stewed? Who thought you could do so many things with Okra? There’s one other thing you can do with these Okras. You can DONATE them.
